It really comes down to the movie showing the violence as being bad - the movie will work if it shows the consequences of Batman's violent actions, forcing him to change. He seems to be actual friends with Gordon, and Gordon wouldn't work with Batman if he didn't see some goodness to him. I understand the concern, but I also think this trailer is cherry picking action scenes where he's mad because it sells.
And don't forget, Bruce is definitely bankrolling Bella Real's mayoral campaign - her posters say paid for by "friends." I think we'll actually see Bruce trying to do more for the city, the journey will be him controlling his rage as Batman ala Arkham Origins. This unstoppable wrecking ball who gives 0 Fs.Ĭlick to expand.I think the scene with him leading people in the water will be a huge turning point for public perception of him as a hero. And that's kind of how they're setting this Batman up. Nobody wants to see John Wick decide to be a nicer guy and start killing less people. People are going to want to see more of this super edgy Batman. But I think this version risks running into trouble when it comes to pivoting into a heroic Batman when this is the starting point. He seems like an unhinged lunatic who doesn't give a crap about how many people he maims, doesn't care if he gets killed, totally self-absorbed, obsessed with vengeance and doing this for all the wrong reasons.ĭon't get me looks like a masterful execution of all the above. I know Reeves mentioned something about Bruce being a humanist, but I certainly can't see it yet. It seems like a total deconstruction of Batman. I don't know.the tone of this seems relentlessly dark and bleak.
So the question is, how do you walk that back once that genie is out of the bottle? Or do you, even? Is this whole series just about him riding the line between hero and vigilante and constantly needing to be reigned in by the people around him? This unstoppable wrecking ball who gives 0 Fs.
But I think it could be tricky to pivot into heroic Batman when this is the starting point. And it's a valid direction to take the character in. It sounds like impending doom that's slowly getting closer and closer.ĭon't get me looks like a masterful execution of all the above. It feels like the Batman equivalent of a Jaws theme. "It's not just call, it's a warning." Even the musical theme feels that way.
The overall tone just doesn't seem to support heroic at all to me. He seems like an unhinged lunatic who doesn't give a crap about how many people he maims, doesn't care if he gets killed, is totally self-absorbed, obsessed with vengeance and doing this for all the wrong reasons. My biggest question right now is.is this series is going to be able to sustain a more heroic version of Bruce/Batman?
